What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of relatively stable conditions in the body's internal environment.
What is a controlled condition or controlled variable?
A body condition that is monitored and regulated, such as body temperature, blood glucose, or blood pressure.
In a homeostatic feedback system, what is a stimulus?
A change that disrupts a controlled condition.
What part of a feedback system detects a change in a controlled condition?
Receptor
What is the function of the receptor in a feedback system?
It detects a change and sends information to the control center.
What part of a feedback system receives information from the receptor and determines what response is needed?
Control center
What is the function of the control center in a feedback system?
It evaluates the information and determines the appropriate response.
What part of a feedback system receives output from the control center and produces a response?
Effector
What is the function of the effector in a feedback system?
It carries out the response directed by the control center.
What is the basic sequence of a homeostatic feedback system?
Stimulus/change → Receptor → Input → Control center → Output → Effector → Response
What does negative feedback do to the original stimulus or change?
It reverses or counteracts the original change and moves the controlled condition back toward its normal range.
What does positive feedback do to the original stimulus or change?
It strengthens or amplifies the original change until a specific event is completed.
