Asymmetrical Balance
A type of balance characterized by an interesting composition where the axis is not centrally located and which is difficult to attain.
Design Development Stage
The phase in which a cost estimate is prepared to ensure that the design remains within the established budget.
Hierarchy
The articulation of the importance or significance of a form or space by its size, shape, or placement relative to other forms and spaces of an organization.
Tempietto
A structure located in Rome, designed by Bramante, which utilized four golden rectangles.
Primary Elements of Form
The four foundational components consisting of point, line, plane, and volume (solids).
Gradation
The result of a gradual change in size within a design.
Contrast
A visual effect that is considered too abrupt if the change is sudden; it creates an interesting architectural composition although too much of it can exist.
Architecture as an Art
A medium for communicating, dealing with emotions, and imparting universal truths, but typically distinct from realism.
Territoriality
A behavior by which an organism characteristically lays claim to an area and defends it against members of its own and other species.
General to Particular Design Approach
An approach where emphasis is given to the Non-Visual (interior enclosed space) before the Visual elements.
Plane
A design element that has width and length but no depth; it can hold color, pattern, and texture and defines the boundaries of a volume.
Archaic Architecture
Architecture that serves as a direct response to man's climate and basic needs.
Land Contours
Site considerations used in the construction of buildings and development of sites in sloping terrains such as Baguio City and Tagaytay City.
Clustered spatial organization
A category of spatial organization where spaces are grouped by proximity or the sharing of a common visual trait or relationship.
Home Base
A programmatic concept related to how a person can maintain their individuality within a space.
Unity
The culmination of all elements of design suggesting harmony, meaning that all unrelated parts are brought into proper relation to each other.
Venustas
One of the three requirements of Architecture according to Vitruvius, pertaining to beautiful composition and economy of materials.
Norman Foster's Definition
Architecture as an expression of values, where the way we build is a reflection of the way we live.
Archaic Period
A period within the development of a style characterized by an effort to find expression for new materials and master new problems.
Curved Line
The type of line considered to be the most graceful.
Volume
A design element described as a container that is defined by the space it encloses and occupies.
Classical Orders Proportion
Proportional systems based on the column diameter.
Split-complementary
A color scheme that uses a primary color and the two colors adjacent to its complementary color.
Axis
A line and regulating device that can establish symmetrical balance; unlike segments, it typically implies termination.
Clearance
A constraint of anthropometrics where the maximum allowable dimensions of an object are considered.
Amorphous Architecture
Architecture that has no rules of form, proportion, or symmetry and seems to spring from nothing.
Functional Character
An architectural trait that expresses the typology and use of the building.
Culture
The customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or social group.
Point
A non-visual element that has no length or depth and serves to join, link, support, surround, or intersect other elements.
Learned Symbols
Symbols that people are familiar with due to long-time association, such as the man and woman icons for toilets.
Fibonacci Sequence
A sequence of numbers (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, …) where the next number is 34.
Symmetry
A balanced distribution and arrangement of equivalent forms and spaces on opposite sides of a dividing line, plane, or center axis.
Contract Documents
Documents used by potential contractors to prepare quotations and set the price for building construction; including working drawings.
Monochromatic
A color scheme using variations in lightness and saturation of a single color, which can be integrated with neutral colors.
Metabolism Movement
An architectural movement with the main concept that buildings are living organisms.
Personal Space
The zone that maintains a distance of 46–122cm.
Scale Types
The variations of scale in design which include Intimate, Monumental, and Shocking.
