in-group
A group that one belongs to and/or identifies with, often referred to as 'us'.
out-group
A group that one does NOT belong to or identify with, often referred to as 'them'.
prejudice
A preconceived negative emotional judgment of a group and its individual members.
stereotype
Generalized beliefs about members of social groups; oversimplified and fixed images of particular people or things.
discrimination
Unjustified negative behaviors directed toward others based on their group membership.
implicit prejudice
Unconscious feelings of prejudice that may not be immediately recognized by the individual.
explicit prejudice
Conscious feelings of prejudice that an individual is aware of.
stereotype threat
The fear that one might confirm negative stereotypes held by others about one's group.
ambivalent discrimination
A form of discrimination characterized by a self-view as fair, but feelings of anxiety and discomfort about certain groups.
outgroup homogeneity
The tendency to overestimate the extent to which members of outgroups are similar to each other.
social identity theory
The theory that a person's self-esteem is influenced by the groups they belong to.
microaggressions
Subtle, often unintentional, discriminatory comments or actions.
institutionalized discrimination
Discrimination that is embedded in the policies and practices of societal institutions.
self-regulation theory
The conscious personal management of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to reach anti-biased goals.
perspective taking
An approach that involves considering the viewpoint and experiences of outgroup members to reduce bias.
jigsaw classroom
An educational technique aimed at reducing prejudice by having students work together on learning tasks.
