Active Immunization
A process where an antigen induces the formation of antibodies and cell-mediated immunity.
Passive Immunization
The administration of antibodies from an external source (animal or human) to provide temporary immunity.
Immunoglobulins
Glycoproteins produced by plasma cells in response to an antigen; serve as antibodies.
Live Attenuated Vaccine
Vaccines that contain organisms that are weakened to reduce their virulence but still retain immunogenicity.
Inactivated Vaccine
Vaccines made from killed pathogens, requiring multiple doses due to weaker immune responses.
Subunit Vaccine
Vaccines that use a part of the microorganism (like proteins or polysaccharides) to invoke an immune response.
DNA Vaccine
A type of vaccine that uses synthetic DNA to induce an immune response.
Booster
An additional dose of vaccine given after the initial dose(s) to enhance or prolong immunity.
Herd Immunity
Protection from infectious diseases that occurs when a large percentage of a population becomes immune.
Epidemiology
The study of how diseases affect the health and illness of populations.
Antibody-mediated immunity
The immune response involving the production of antibodies by B cells.
Cell-mediated immunity
Type of immunity that does not involve antibodies, but rather involves lymphocytes like T cells.
IgG
Immunoglobulin G, a type of antibody that plays a crucial role in the immune response.
Hypersensitivity Reaction
An exaggerated immune response that can lead to tissue damage and inflammatory reactions.
Lyophilized Vaccine
A freeze-dried vaccine that requires reconstitution before administration.
Adjuvant
A substance added to vaccines to enhance the body’s immune response to the provided antigen.
Toxoid
An inactivated toxin, whose toxicity has been altered, used to elicit an immune response without causing disease.
Maternal Immunization
Vaccination administered to pregnant individuals for the protection of the mother and infant.
Travel Vaccine
Vaccines recommended for individuals traveling to specific regions or areas with endemic diseases.
Recombinant Vector Vaccine
Vaccines that use a virus or bacterium to deliver antigenic genetic material into host cells.
