Formula Mass
The sum of the atomic weights of the atoms in a chemical formula.
Ionic Compounds
Compounds composed of three-dimensional order of ions, using empirical formulas.
Formula Weight (FW)
The sum of the atomic weights for the atoms in a chemical formula.
Percent Composition
The percentage by mass of each element in a compound.
Molarity
The number of moles of solute per liter of solution.
Dilution
The process of reducing a solution's concentration by adding solvent.
Solute
The component of a solution present at a lower concentration than the solvent.
Concentration
The relative amount of a component in a solution.
Empirical Formula
A formula that shows the simplest whole-number ratio of the elements in a compound.
Molecular Formula
A formula that shows the actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule.
Parts per Million (ppm)
A unit of concentration that expresses the mass of solute in a million mass units of solution.
Mass Percentage
The ratio of the mass of a component to the total mass of the solution, expressed as a percentage.
Molar Mass
The mass of one mole of a substance, usually expressed in grams per mole.
Mole Ratio
The ratio of the number of moles of one substance to the number of moles of another substance.
Aqueous Solution
A solution in which water is the solvent.
