Cytoskeleton

A network of protein filaments and tubules in the cytoplasm of many living cells, giving them shape and coherence.

Microtubule

Thickest component; involved in maintaining cell shape, cell mobility (cilia, flagella), chromosome movement during cell division, and organelle transport.

Centrosome

Microtubule-organizing center in animal cells.

Centriole

Part of the centrosome in animal cells (involved in spindle fiber formation during cell division).

Cilia

Short, hair-like projections for movement or moving fluids.

Flagella

Long, whip-like projections for movement.

Microfilament (Actin Filament)

Thinnest component; involved in cell shape, muscle contraction, cell division (cleavage furrow), and amoeboid movement.

Intermediate Filament

Fibrous proteins supercoiled into thicker cables; more permanent fixtures, maintain cell shape, anchor organelles (hold them in place).
