Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT)
A theory stating that particles move faster when temperature increases.
Collision Theory
A theory stating that chemical reactions occur when particles collide effectively, and a greater number of effective collisions leads to a faster reaction rate.
Temperature Effect on Reaction Rate
Higher temperatures cause particles to move faster, leading to more frequent collisions with greater energy, which increases the reaction rate.
Refrigeration
A method of lowering temperature to slow particle movement, reduce collision frequency and energy, and decrease the rate of spoilage reactions.
Concentration Effect on Reaction Rate
Increasing reactant particles in a given space places them closer together, increasing collision frequency and effective collisions in a shorter period of time.
Lower Concentration
A condition with fewer particles present, which reduces the chances of collisions and slows down the reaction rate.
Surface Area Effect on Reaction Rate
Exposing more particles by breaking a substance into smaller pieces or powdering it increases contact area with other reactants, allowing more frequent collisions.
Effective Collisions
Particle collisions that result in a chemical reaction; increasing their number or frequency causes reactions to occur faster.
Food Deterioration
The decay of perishable goods caused by higher temperatures speeding up spoilage reactions and bacterial growth.
