What is ENERGY ?

Energy is the ability to work. It is not touchable, but it exists. Energy is measured in units called joules, given the symbol J. All types of energy fall into two basic groups Potential and Kinetic Energy.

2
New cards

Define potential energy and give everyday examples

Energy that is stored in or by an object. eg- a roller coaster at the top of a ramp

3
New cards

Define Kinetic energy and give everyday examples

Energy that an object or substance has because of its movement. eg- a moving car

4
New cards

A pen sitting on a desk. Potential, kinetic or both ?

Potential (gravitational)

5
New cards

A ball rolled along the ground. Potential, kinetic or both ?

Kinetic (translation)

6
New cards

A spinning top. Potential, kinetic or both ?

Kinetic (rotational)

7
New cards

A person standing on a mountain. Potential, kinetic or both ?

Potential (gravitational)

8
New cards

The atoms in a metal vibrating back and forth. Potential, kinetic or both ?

Kinetic (vibrational)

9
New cards

A skier going down a mountain. Potential, kinetic or both ?

Both (gravitational and translational)

10
New cards

State the Law of Conservation of Energy.

The law states that energy is not created or destroyed. Instead it is transformed into different types of energy, or transferred between objects.

11
New cards

Example of Law of Conservation of Energy

A persobn moving on a bike applies the brakes and comes to a stop. The original kinetic energy of the bike and rider are easily seen, but where did the energy go as the bike slows and stops? It has created heat which can be felt if you touch the breaks of the bike. The energy was not destroyed, it just changed form into heat energy.

12
New cards

Distinguish between energy transfer and energy transformation

Similarities- both show law of conservation of energy, both use circles + arrows

Differences- Transform shows change in type of energy, Transfer shows movement of energy from 1 object to another.
