Atmosphere
The thick layer or blanket of gases surrounding Earth, held close by gravity, that protects life, regulates temperature, and controls weather and climate.
Climate
The average weather conditions of a place calculated over a long period of time.
Troposphere
The lowest atmospheric layer extending from 8km near the poles to 18km at the equator, containing nearly 75% of atmospheric mass where all weather phenomena occur.
Lapse Rate
The rate in the troposphere at which temperature decreases with altitude, specifically by 1∘C for every 165m of elevation.
Stratosphere
The atmospheric layer situated above the troposphere extending up to about 50km, containing the ozone layer and providing minimal air turbulence for flying airplanes.
Tropopause
The boundary layer separating the troposphere below from the stratosphere above.
Mesosphere
The middle atmospheric layer extending up to about 80km where meteorites burn up due to friction with gaseous particles.
Thermosphere (Ionosphere)
The atmospheric layer extending up to about 450km where temperatures reach up to 2000∘C and gas atoms convert into ions, enabling radio transmission and satellite communication.
Exosphere
The outermost layer of the atmosphere containing traces of hydrogen and helium that acts as the transition zone to outer space.
Nitrogen
The most abundant gas in the atmosphere (78%) which dilutes oxygen, prevents rapid combustion, and is essential for plant growth.
Carbon Dioxide
An atmospheric gas present at 0.04% used by green plants during photosynthesis and critical for maintaining Earth's temperature via the greenhouse effect.
Weather
The day-to-day conditions of the atmosphere at a specific time and place.
Temperature Range
The difference calculated between the maximum and minimum temperatures recorded over a given timeframe, usually 24hours.
Mean Daily Temperature
The average daily temperature calculated using the formula: Mean=(Maximum+Minimum)÷2.
Atmospheric Pressure
The force exerted on Earth's surface by the weight of the air column pressing down above it.

Barometer
An instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure, usually displaying readings in millibars (mb).
Wind
Air in horizontal motion, moving from areas of higher atmospheric pressure to areas of lower pressure.
Wind Vane
A tool featuring a pointer and tail mounted on a rotating axis that turns to indicate the direction from which wind is blowing.
Anemometer
An instrument fitted with spinning cups or blades used to measure wind speed.
Relative Humidity
A percentage scale measuring how much moisture the air holds compared to the maximum amount it could hold at that temperature.
Hygrometer
An instrument used to measure the humidity or water vapour content in the air.
Rain Gauge
A tool consisting of a wide funnel and a graduated container used to measure the depth of rainfall over a set period.
Loo
Strong, hot, and dry winds that blow during the daytime in summer over northern and northwestern India.
Mango Showers
Pre-monsoon rainfall in Kerala and Karnataka towards the end of summer that aids in the ripening of mangoes.
Western Disturbances
Low-pressure systems originating over the Mediterranean Sea and Western Asia brought by westerly jet streams, causing vital winter rain in the northern plains.
Mahawat
The local name for the winter rainfall in northern India caused by Western Disturbances, which is essential for rabi crops.
October Heat
An oppressive daytime weather condition in early October marked by high temperature and high humidity during the retreating monsoon period.
Lag-time
The interval of time between heavy rainfall and the occurrence of peak stream discharge or flooding.
Hydrograph
A graph or chart showing stream discharge over time, used to illustrate lag-time between heavy rainfall and peak flood flow.

Flash Flood
A sudden and violent splash or flow of water caused by riverbank breaches, dam bursts, cloudbursts, or tsunamis.
Drainage Basin
The entire land area drained by a main river and its tributaries.
Flood Plain
The flattish area alongside river channels covered by water during flood events.
Catchment Area
The upper area of a river system that catches rainfall and feeds the main river.
Carbon Footprint
The total amount of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide, released into the atmosphere due to human activities, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
Direct Carbon Footprint
Emissions originating from activities directly controlled by an individual or entity, such as driving gasoline vehicles or burning fuel at home.
Indirect Carbon Footprint
Emissions produced during the manufacturing, processing, and transportation of products and services that are consumed.
Natural Vegetation
A plant population that has evolved naturally in a region without human assistance or intervention.
Photosynthesis
The chemical process by which green plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce glucose and oxygen.
Global Warming
The gradual increase in Earth's average temperature caused mainly by the atmospheric buildup of greenhouse gases.
