Endogenetic Forces
Internal geological processes originating within the Earth that cause crustal movements, seismicity, folding, faulting, and vulcanicity.
Exogenetic Forces
External processes acting on the surface of the Earth, including denudation and weathering, which shape landforms and slope development.
Geomorphic Cycle
Theories conceptualized by W.M. Davis and W. Penck describing the sequential stage development and evolution of landforms over time.
ENSO Events
Climate variations encompassing El Niño, La Niña, and Southern Oscillations that disrupt normal ocean atmospheric circulation systems.
Glacial Lake Outburst (GLOF)
A sudden hazard event occurring when a dam containing a glacial lake fails, releasing large volumes of water downstream.
Deep Ecology
An environmental philosophy and ethics framework advocating for the intrinsic value of all living entities regardless of human utility.
Brundtland Commission
An international initiative that outlined key frameworks for sustainable development, leading to modern global environmental policies.
Law of the Primate City
An urban concept referring to a leading city that is disproportionately larger than any other city in the nation's urban hierarchy.
Rank Size Rule
A regular population distribution model in urban systems stating that the nth largest city is 1/n the size of the largest city.
Central Place Theory
Spatial location theories developed by Christaller and Lösch to explain the size, distribution, and functional hierarchy of settlements.
Edge Cities
Concentrations of business, shopping, and entertainment outside a traditional central business district in what had previously been a residential or rural area.
Von Thünen's Model
An agricultural land use model determining optimal spatial distribution of crops based on land rent and transportation costs to market.
Dependency Theory of Underdevelopment
A regional development theory arguing that economic resources flow from a periphery of poor states to a core of wealthy states.
Heartland and Rimland Theories
Classic geopolitical theories proposing strategic geographic core regions necessary for achieving continental or global dominance.
Dualisms in Geographic Studies
Dichotomous philosophical splits in geography including physical vs. human, regional vs. systematic, qualitative vs. quantitative, and idiographic vs. nomothetic.
Choropleth Map
A cartographic technique that uses graded shading or coloring within predefined areas to represent statistical values.
Dasymetric Map
A thematic mapping method that refines choropleth boundaries using ancillary data to depict true spatial distribution patterns.
Digital Elevation Model (DEM)
A digital 3D representation of terrain elevation surface data produced for geographical information system analysis.
Bifurcation Ratio
A drainage basin morphometric metric defined as the ratio between the number of streams of a given order to the number of streams of the next higher order.
Agro-Climatic Zones
Land units classified on the basis of broad climatic features, soil types, and water availability tailored for specific regional crop planning.
