• small pieces of the plant (explants) are sterilised to kill microorganisms

• explants are placed in a petri dish (nutrient medium) containing nutrients and growth hormones to stimulate growth

• cells in the explants divide and grow into a small plant

• the small plants are taken out of the medium, planted in soil and put into glasshouses to control light intensity

describe the process of cloning animals

• nucleus of an egg cell is removed

• adult cell nucleus is inserted in its place

• the cell is stimulated by electric shock - this causes cell division

• the dividing cells begin to form an embryo

• the embryo is implanted into the womb of a surrogate mother

• the offspring born is a clone of the adult body cell
