Original Holiness

Free Will

• Ability to choose between good and evil.

• Makes real love and moral responsibility possible.

The Fall

Adam and Eve’s first disobedience against God, resulting in the loss of original holiness and justice.

Original Sin

Adam and Eve’s first disobedience against God, resulting in the loss of original holiness and justice.

Personal Sin

A wrong action that a person freely chooses.

Concupiscence

The human inclination or tendency toward sin. It comes from humanity’s fallen condition but does not force a person to sin.

Figurative language

Symbolic or nonliteral language used to communicate a deeper truth.

Etiology

A story or explanation about the origin or cause of something.

Cain and Abel

Shows sin spreading after the Fall. Cain’s jealousy is an example of concupiscence, but he still freely chooses his actions.

Communal Sin

Sin involving or affecting an entire community or society.

Tower of Babel

Shows human pride. People try to make a great name for themselves, resulting in division and confusion.
