what Ab, NSAIDs & fluids do you give for a calf with diarrhea
1. Parenteral antibiotic- amoxicilin, doxicillin, colistin, sulfonamides with trimethoprim
2. halofuginon for cryptospordium
3. diclazuril, toltrazuril for coccidiosis
4. isotonic-lactated ringers solution + 0 .9% sodium chloride(saline)
Hypertonic- hypertonic NaCL(saline- 4-5ml/kg over 4 minutes), sodium bicarbonate 8.4% (10ml/kg over 10mins)
5. NSAIDS- flunixin
What fluids to give calf with acute pneumonia ia
1. Give fluids to balance acidosis,
2. Severe acidosis/ 10% Dehydration= hypertonic fluids eg. hypertonic saline (4-5ml/kg over 4mins) and hypertonic sodium bicarbonate 8.4% (10ml/kg of bw over 10mins)
Mild acidosis/dehydration= Isotonic fluids eg. Ringers lactate
(Antibiotics-amoxicillin, erythromycin and oxytetracycline
NSAIDS- flunixin, metamizole, ketoprofen, meloxicam)
Max rate of IV fluids in cows
for a hypertonic solution IV 7.2% combined with oral electrolyte solutions or water, max rate is 4-5ml/kg/4mins
so for a 500KG COW that is 2-2.5l/4mins (.5-.625L/min)
weird questions maybe double check
Dehydration signs in calves
1. Slow CRT
2. M.M sticky/dry

dehydration caw - how to recognise
6-7%- slight sunken eye, skin turgor slightly increased, mucous membranes moist
8-9% eyes obviously sunken, skin turgor obviously increased, mucus membranes tacky
10-12% - eyes deeply sunken in orbits, skin tents and does not recur.
lab test hematocrit 24-46% plasma protein increased
6. What to give dehydrated calf
If severely dehydrated give Hypertonic
-hypertonic saline (4-5ml/kg over 4mins) and hypertonic
-sodium bicarbonate 8.4% (10ml/kg of bw over 10mins)
If less than >10% can give Ringers lactate
Between 6-8% can give orally: oral electrolyte sol 40ml/kg
7. Where do we give fluids/ Fluid therapy by route of administration
1. IV into the jugular or the ear in calves
2. SC when veins are sunken, slow especially when calf is bad, ability to absorb decreased when sick
3. Try to use tube but not recommended when calf is lying down and cant get up.
4. give intraperitoneal
