Canadian federal law passed in 1876 and has been amended several times. The act governs all matters regarding First Nations peoples' (Status Indians) rights, status, bands and reserves

rights granted, by government, to individual people in a society
Indian Status Card
identity document that confirms you are registered as a Status Indian under the Indian Act
Indigenous
descendants of the original inhabitants of an area
Minority Language Education Rights
In the charter of rights and freedoms. Ensure that the language minority in a province is provided education in that language, through the provincial government.
Mother Tongue
the language which a person has grown up speaking from early childhood
Non-status Indian
First Nations person who is not registered or who has lost their status under the Indian Act or amendments to the Indian Act
Official Bilingualism
the laws and policies that ensure that French and English are equal in Canada.
Official Language Groups
Communities whose member's first official language learned, and still understood, is French or English
Official Language Minority
the official language group that is the linguistic minority in a province.
Official Languages Act
federal law whose purpose is to ensure equality in the use of English and French in federal institutions and support the development of English and French linguistic minority communities

First Nations person who meets the requirements and is registered with the Canadian government under the Indian Act
