Articulation
The process of producing sounds by using the articulators.
Articulators
Structures, both mobile and immobile, that shape the sounds of speech.
Source-filter theory
A model describing how the vocal tract shapes sound produced by the vocal cords.
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
The joint connecting the mandible to the skull, allowing for movement.
Velopharyngeal closure
The action that prevents air from escaping through the nasal cavity during speech.
Mucous membrane
A membrane that lines certain cavities in the body and secretes mucus.
Intrinsic tongue muscles
Muscles entirely contained within the tongue, allowing shape changes.
Extrinsic tongue muscles
Muscles that originate outside the tongue and insert into it, controlling its position.
Deciduous teeth
Temporary teeth that eventually fall out to be replaced by permanent teeth.
Malocclusion
Misalignment of teeth when the jaws are closed.
Pharynx
The part of the throat behind the mouth and nasal cavity, important for speech.
Facial nerve (VII)
The cranial nerve responsible for innervating the muscles of the lips.
Trigeminal nerve (V)
The cranial nerve responsible for innervating the muscles of the mandible.
Vagus nerve (X)
The cranial nerve involved in the control of the muscles of the pharynx and velum.
Sutures
Joints between bones of the skull that allow for slight movement.
