What is a noise gate?
A dynamic processor that eliminates sounds below a given threshold in a recording
Threshold
The volume below which a noise gate silences audio.
When a signal goes above the threshold….
…It opens up the gate.
Reduction/Range
The amount of volume the signal is reduced by
Attack
The amount of time it takes for the gate to open once the signal goes above the threshold
Hold
The amount of time the gate stays open for after the signal drops below the threshold level.
Release
The amount of time it takes for the gate to close once the signal has dropped below the threshold and the hold time has passed.
When is a noise gate suitable in the removal of unwanted noise?
When the unwanted noise falls below the threshold established by the intended signal
