Major Connector
The unit of a removable partial denture (RPD) to which all other parts are directly or indirectly attached, connecting components from opposite sides of the arch to provide cross-arch stability.
Single Palatal Strap
A maxillary major connector typically used in tooth-bounded Class III cases with strong abutments and minimal vertical ridge resorption.
Palatal Bar
A maxillary major connector that is thin and overly flexible, considered the least logical palatal connector due to poor cross-arch stability.
Antero-posterior Palatal Strap
The most versatile and rigid maxillary major connector, featuring anterior/posterior straps measuring 8−10mm, lateral straps measuring 7−9mm, and a 6mm clearance from gingival crevices.
Complete Palatal Coverage
A palatal plate-type connector indicated for Class I or II arches with weak abutments or severe vertical bone resorption, covering the same posterior area as a complete denture.
U-Shape Palatal Connector
A maxillary major connector that lacks rigidity and should only be used in clinical cases presenting with inoperable palatal tori.
Lingual Bar
The most preferred mandibular major connector, possessing a half-pear shape with a height of 4mm, requiring at least 8mm of vertical space between the gingival margin and floor of the mouth.
Linguoplate
A mandibular major connector contoured to follow supracingular surfaces, indicated when space is less than 7mm, or in the presence of a high lingual frenum, severe vertical ridge resorption, or periodontally weakened teeth.
Sublingual Bar
A mandibular connector used in lieu of a linguoplate when an anterior lingual undercut is present and the lingual frenum does not interfere; contraindicated in the presence of lingual tori.
Continuous Bar (Cingulum Bar)
A mandibular major connector indicated for improper axial alignment of anterior teeth requiring excessive blockout; contraindicated in lingually tilted anterior teeth or wide diastemas.
Labial Bar
A mandibular major connector used in rare instances when remaining natural lower premolars and incisors are severely lingually inclined or tilted.
Cross-arch Stability
The resistance to displacement achieved when a rigid major connector joins components across the arch, limiting movement possibilities by acting as a counteracting lever.
Minor Connector
The unit of an RPD that joins the major connector to other components, such as clasp assemblies, indirect retainers, auxiliary rests, or denture bases.
Proximal Plate
The surface of a minor connector that contacts the corresponding guiding plane surface of an abutment tooth.
Guiding Plane
The vertical parallel surface prepared on an abutment tooth that is contacted by the proximal plate of a minor connector.
Latticework Construction
The strongest type of minor connector for attachment of denture bases, consisting of a ladder-like network using Gauge 12 (short) and Gauge 16 (long) struts.
Mesh Construction
A type of denture base minor connector featuring multiple holes; it offers a weaker attachment than latticework and makes acrylic packing more difficult.
Bead, Wire, or Nail-Head Minor Connector
The weakest denture base minor connector type used with metal bases, indicated for short-span tooth-supported cases with well-healed ridges and offering superior tissue hygiene.
Tissue Stops (Cast Stops)
Small square metal projections on minor connectors that prevent framework bending under load during acrylic packing and processing.
Finishing Lines
The internal and external offset junctions between a minor connector and major connector that create a mechanical undercut, smooth transition, and definite border for the acrylic denture base.
Approach Arm
A minor connector for vertical projection or bar-type clasps that approaches the tooth from an apical direction and is uniquely required to possess a degree of flexibility.
