What does IASTM do
treats tight muscles, muscle adhesions, scar tissue, strains, tendinopathies
what does IASTM do physiologically
initiates body’s local inflammatory response to breakdown adhesions and scar tissues, increase blood flow, improve ROM, reduce chronic inflammation
what are the indications for IASTM
muscle strains
muscle tightness
tendinitis
fascitis
chronic pain
what are the contradictions to doing IASTM
acute injury
open wound
fracture
body/sensitive area
if patient says no
how long should scraping last for
max 30 sec in one direction
max 5 total minutes
what should you tell a patient during IASTM
is pressure to hard/soft
it will be uncomfortable
can cause bruising and redness
what is cupping used for
tight muscles, muscle adhesions, strains, tendinopathies, chronic pain
what does cupping do
uses negative pressure to pull fluid and layers of tissue in direction of cups
increased blood flow
reduced muscle tightness
improved ROM
reduced pain and inflammation
what are cupping indications
muscle tightness
muscle spasm
localized pain
tendonitis
what are cupping contradictions
acute injury
open wound
fracture
bony/sensitive area
if a patient says no
how many pumps should you use with cupping
two
how long should cupping last
10 minutes
what do you tell a patient with cupping
relax
feels like the cup is sucking up the muscle
can cause bruising and redness
normal to be sore
what types of estim are used to reduce pain
pre mod
IFC
why does premod and IFC reduce pain
give brain alternative stimulus that blocks pain receptors
how many pads do you use with premod
2
how long should premod last
10-15 minutes
what do you tell a patient when doing a normal speed increase with premod
tell me when you start to feel the tingling
what should you tell a patient when doing a slow increase on premod
tell me when to stop it should be annoying but not painful
what are indications of premod
smaller area
pain
post surgery
chronic pain/injury
acute pain/injury
what are contradictions to premod
open wound
fracture
pregnancy
pacemaker
damaged nerves
patient says no
what are indications for IFC
larger area
pain relief
after surgery
acute pain/injury
chronic pain/injury
what are contradictions to IFC
open wound
fracture
pregnancy
pacemaker
damaged nerves
patient says no
how many pads should you use with IFC
4
how long should IFC last
10-15 minutes
what should you tell a patient when doing a normal speed increase with IFC
tell me when you start to feel tingling
what should you tell a patient when doing a slow increase with IFC
tell me when to stop it should be annoying but not painful
what are indications of russian
muscle re-education
post surgery
acute (no strain)
what are contradictions to russian
open wound
fracture
pregnancy
pacemaker
damaged nerves
patient says no
why do you do russian
help patient activate muscle with external stimulus
promote muscle function recovery
produce isometric contractions
what type of pads do you use with russian
large rectangle pads
what is the average time for russian
10 minutes
what do you tell a patient when turning up intensity on russian
tell me when you start to feel tingly
strong and uncomfortable
contract with each stimulation
what does ultrasound do
sends sound waves into tissue which facilitates the body’s natural healing process, reduces inflammation/pain, and increases blood flow
what effects are always present when ultrasounding
improves O2 delivery by increasing capillary density
tissue regeneration
increase fibroblasts
vascular regeneration
what duty cycle do you use with non termal
10/20/50 %
what duty cycle do you use with thermal
100% or continuous
what are indications to non thermal

bruising
assessing stress fracture
what are contradictions to non thermal
over eyes, heart, skull, genitals, pregnant uterus
infection
skin disease
impaired circulation/sensation
pacemaker
cancer
which machines can you use with non thermal
nugget
franken stim
how long should non thermal be
5 minutes
what should you tell a patient with non thermal
you shouldn’t feel anything
if it gets hot tell me
what are additional effects with thermal
increased tissue extensibility
decreased joint stiffness
reduced muscle spasm
decreased pain perception
increased blood flow
what machine do you use with thermal
nugget
what are indications for thermal
subacute inflammation/chronic inflammation
pain
decreased ROM due to muscle tightness
muscle spasm
tissue damage
what are contradictions to thermal
acute injury/inflammation
metal in treatment area

1 MHz
what frequency do you use with superficial tissue
3 MHz
what should you tell a patient with thermal
should get a little warm
if achy, uncomfortable, or too hot let me know
