alliteration

a repetition of the same starting sound in a group of close words

allusion

a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing, or event of historical, cultural, literary, or political significance

anaphora

the repetition of a word or expression at the beginning of successive phrases, clauses, sentences, or verses especially for poetic or rhetorical effect

anecdote

a usually short narrative of an interesting, amusing, or biographical incident

audience

the specific individual, group or community that a speaker is trying to reach

connotation

the emotional or cultural feeling associated with a word beyond its dictionary definition

context

the background, setting, or surrounding circumstances that help explain and give meaning to an event, statement, or idea

denotation

the literal, objective, and straightforward dictionary definition of a word, completely free of any emotional or cultural associations

diction

the choice of words in writing or the way a person pronounces words when speaking

ethos

the distinguishing character, sentiment, moral nature, or guiding beliefs of a person, group, or institution

extended metaphor

a detailed comparison between two unlike things that continues across multiple, sentences, paragraphs, stanzas, or an entire literary work

figurative language

language that consists of or includes figures of speech (such as metaphors or similes)

hyperbole

extreme exaggeration

hypophora

a rhetorical device where a speaker or writer asks a question and immediately answers

imagery

the use of descriptive or figurative language in literature or art that appeals to our physical senses to create mental pictures

juxtaposition

the placement of two or more things side by side, close together, or in a specific sequence to compare them, contrast them, or reveal an unexpected relationship
