How does the hepatic portal system work?

Blood cant get drained into ivc directly from intestines. Blood from the heart goes into intestine, the hepatic portal vein carries into the liver. It turns into the hepatic sinouids. This allows the liver to drain any toxins from the nutrient absorbed. The blood is then drained into the ivc from liver via hepatic vein
