Portal vein
Refers to two capillary beds
Portal system
Refers to both capillary beds and intervening veins
Do organs drain directly into the digestive system?
No not directly - only the liver
How does the hepatic portal system work?
Blood cant get drained into ivc directly from intestines. Blood from the heart goes into intestine, the hepatic portal vein carries into the liver. It turns into the hepatic sinouids. This allows the liver to drain any toxins from the nutrient absorbed. The blood is then drained into the ivc from liver via hepatic vein
What makes the portal vein
Superior mesenteric vein and splenic vein (inferior mesenteric vein joins early with the splenic vein)
Where do hepatic artery and vein travel?
In lesser omentum along with hepatic portal vein
Label the venous drainage
