Social Movement
A loosely formed coalition of groups who agree to pursue a common objective, often aiming to create spaces for the interests of the collectivity rather than just the privileged class.
Issue-based-coalition-building
A style of organizing across social classes, sectors, and political ideology characteristic of social movements with flat hierarchies.
Anti-statist orientation
A common orientation among new social movements (NSMs) characterized by dismay with the state's perceived impotence in ensuring democratic accountability and promoting social justice.
Middle class radicalism
A phenomenon where social movements are organized and run by the educated middle class or the most educated/privileged section of generally less privileged groups.
Propaganda Movement
A movement led by the ilustrados during the Spanish colonial period that sought formal political representation in government and criticized friar sovereignty.
Ilustrados
The educated members of the principalia class who found ideological inspiration in liberal thought and led the quest for reforms during the Spanish colonial period.
Philippine Revolution of 1896
A mass-based and armed struggle for independence led by the Katipunan, an underground organization of the semi-proletarian class and intellectuals.
Katipunan
An underground organization that attracted different classes in society to launch a revolution against Spanish rule.
HUKBALAHAP
Hukbo ng Bayan Laban sa Hapon; a left-wing guerrilla movement led by labor and peasant leaders and intellectuals that fought the Japanese alongside the USAFFE.
USAFFE
United States Armed Forces in the Far East.
Cause-Oriented Groups
Groups that emerged during Martial Law advocating for 'new politics' based on issues (such as women, environment, and peace) rather than personalities, patronage, or corruption.
Marcos Resign Movement
A diverse group of protesters whose motivations ranged from the Aquino killing and one-man rule to ideas of national sovereignty and democratization.
Cory Aquino for President Movement
A movement where the majority of the opposition proposed Mrs. Corazon "Cory" Aquino as the presidential standard bearer against President Ferdinand Marcos in the 1986 Snap Elections.
1986 EDSA People Power Revolution
A protest triggered by massive election fraud during the Snap Presidential Elections, including the deletion of registered voters and a walkout by Commission on Elections members.
2001 EDSA People Power Revolution (EDSA 2)
A protest resulting from the "suppression of truth" when pro-Estrada senators barred evidence in an impeachment trial, leading people to lost faith in the court's integrity.
