1) Definition
Self-disclosure is revealing personal info (feelings, experiences, thoughts) to a partner — builds trust, intimacy, and attraction.
2)Social Penetration Theory
Altman & Taylor — relationships develop through gradual self-disclosure. More personal info = deeper intimacy.
3)Breadth and Depth
Early disclosure = broad but shallow. As trust builds, disclosure becomes deeper and more meaningful — increases closeness
4)Reciprocity
Disclosure must be mutual. Partners respond with understanding and share in return — this strengthens emotional connection.(Reid and Shaver)
5) Timing
Too much disclosure too early may reduce attraction. Effective disclosure happens gradually at the right stage.
6) Emotional > Factual
Emotional disclosures (fears, dreams) increase closeness more than factual ones — shows trust and vulnerability.
✅ Sprecher et al.
Found that reciprocal disclosure increased liking — supports the theory that mutual sharing boosts attraction.
✅Real-life application
Used in couple’s therapy to improve communication and satisfaction — shows practical benefit of self-disclosure.
❌Cultural bias
Disclosure norms vary — Western cultures value openness more than collectivist ones. Limits generalisability.
❌Not always positive
Disclosure doesn’t always boost attraction — if info is too personal or negative, it can reduce liking. Context matters.
