Syntax
The arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language.
Semantics
The branch of linguistics and logic concerned with meaning.
Morphology
The study of the internal structure of words and the rules for word formation.
Pragmatics
The branch of linguistics dealing with language in use and the contexts in which it is used.
MLU (Mean Length of Utterance)
A measure of linguistic productivity in children, calculated as the average number of morphemes per utterance.
Exploratory Play
Nonmeaningful manipulation of objects typically seen in children aged 6-8 months.
Functional Play
Purposeful exploration of objects with appropriate use typically seen in children aged 9-12 months.
Sociodramatic Play
Pretend play involving multiple children with roles and themes, commonly seen in children ages 3-5 years.
Bound Morphemes
Morphemes that cannot stand alone and are used to modify meaning, such as prefixes and suffixes.
Irregular Plurals
Plurals that do not follow the standard rule of adding -s or -es, such as 'children' from 'child'.
