Five Ways to See Motivation
The five methods used to observe motivation: behavior, engagement, psychophysiology, brain activation, and self-report.
Mastery Orientation
An orientation occurring in a safe environment where an individual processes info, acquires skills, learns to successfully deal with the environment, and strives to learn everything there is to learn.
Ego Orientation
An orientation occurring in a life-threatening or life-or-death environment where an individual learns only about immediate things used for survival, leading to a more limited view of the world.
Survival Needs (Avoidance)
Biologically based needs that take priority over mastery needs, relying on brain reflexes over cognitions.
Daily Hassles Perception
The phenomenon where the brain frequently interprets routine daily hassles as life-threatening situations.
