Heating effect of current
The phenomenon where electrical energy is converted into heat energy as electric current passes through a wire, caused by the wire's resistance opposing the flow of electrons.
Heating element
A rod or a coil of wire inside appliances like electric heaters and kettles that becomes hot (and sometimes glows red) when current flows through it.
Nichrome wire
A special kind of wire used to analyze the heating effect of current; in the provided activity, a thickness of about 0.5mm (24-25 gauge) is used.
Joule's Heating Law
The law describing the connection between heat produced and electrical energy, represented mathematically as H=I2Rt, where H is heat, I is current, R is resistance, and t is time.
Electricity consumption
The amount of electrical energy used, calculated by multiplying power (in watts) by time (in hours), and typically measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
Kilowatt (kW)
A unit of power equal to 1000Watts.

Electric Fuse

Fuse wire composition

Overloading
A condition occurring when too many high-power rating electrical appliances are switched on at once, causing the total current drawn to exceed the circuit's rated value.
Short circuiting
A phenomenon that occurs when two naked wires of an electricity supply line touch each other, causing a large amount of current to flow.
