What are the main structures of the eye?
cornea, sclera, choroid, retina, iris, pupil, lens, optic nerve
What is the function of the cornea?
It is the clear front surface that bends(refracts)Light as it enters
What is the function of the lens?
it focuses light onto the retina by changing shape
What is the function of the iris?
it controls pupil size to regulate how much light enters the eye
What is the pupil?
The opening in the center of the iris that allows light to enter
What is the function of the optic nerve?
It carries visual information from the retina to the brain.
What is the function of the retina?
It contain photo receptors that convert light into nerve signals
What are accessory eye structures?
Structures that protect lubricate, and support the eye
What is the function of the eyelids?
Protect the eye and spread tears to keep it moist
What is the function of the eyelashes?
Protect the eye and spread tears to keep it moist
What is the function of the lacrimal gland?
produces tears to lubricate and clean the eye
Name three structures that lubricate the eye and secretions
Lacrimal gland- tears, tarsal (meibomain) glands- oily secretion, conjunctiva- mucus
Where is the blind spot?
The area where the optic nerve exits the eye
Why is it called the blind spot?
It has no photoreceptors, so no image is detected there
What are the two types of photoreceptors?
Rods and cones
Where are rods located and what they do?
mostly in the outer retina; detect dim light and black and white vision
Where are cones located and what do they do?
Concentrated in the fovea; detect color and fine detail
Where is the lacrimal gland located?
Above the outer corner of each eye (superior-lateral orbit)
What is the correct order light travels through the eye?
pupil, lens, vitreous humor, retina
