Acoustic shadowing
A dark, anechoic artifacts behind a structure that reflects or absorbs nearly all ultrasound waves.
Echogenicity
Refers to a structure's ability to reflect sound waves, with terms like hypoechoic (few echoes), hyperechoic (many echoes), and anechoic (no echoes).
Acoustic enhancement
An area of increased brightness beneath a fluid-filled structure due to minimal attenuation of sound waves.
Attenuation
The reduction in the intensity or amplitude of a sound wave caused by absorption, scattering or reflection of the sound wave as it travels through the tissue. Higher attenuation results in loss of penetration and echo. Attenuation is due to sound wave scatter, reflection and absorption.
