International System of Units (SI)
An official system of measurement used worldwide for units of length, volume, mass, temperature, and time.
Volume
The space occupied by a substance, commonly measured in liters (L) and milliliters (mL) by chemists.
Length
Measured in units of meters (m) in both the metric and SI systems, and centimeters (cm) by chemists.
Mass
A measure of the quantity of material it contains, with the SI unit of kilogram (kg), often measured in grams (g) by chemists.
Temperature
A measure of how hot or cold an object feels, measured on the Celsius (°C) scale, or Kelvin (K) scale in the SI system.
Time
Measured in units of seconds (s) in both the metric and SI systems, based on an atomic clock.
Volume Relationships
1 L = 1000 mL; 1 L = 1.06 qt; 946 mL = 1 qt
Length Relationships
1 m = 100 cm; 1 m = 39.4 in; 1 m = 1.09 yd; 2.54 cm = 1 in
Mass Relationships
1 kg = 1000 g; 1 kg = 2.20 lb; 454 g = 1 lb
