Fluid
Any substance that can flow, take the shape of its container, and (in the context of liquids) refuse to compress.
Pressure (P)
The measure of how concentrated a force is over a specific area, calculated by the formula Pressure=AreaForce.
Force (F)
The total amount of push, pull, or weight acting on an object, measured in Newtons (N).
Area (A)
The total surface space or contact surface where a push is applied, measured in square meters (m2).
Pascal (Pa)
The official scientific unit used to measure pressure, representing Newtons per square meter (N/m2).
Pascal's Principle
A law formulated by Blaise Pascal in 1647 stating that pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted undiminished to every portion of the fluid and to the walls of its container.
Hydraulic System
A mechanical network that uses confined, incompressible fluids to transmit and multiply force, acting as a motorized lever powered by liquid.
Incompressible
A characteristic of liquids where molecules cannot be squeezed closer together, allowing them to pass pressure along instantly in all directions.
Hydraulic Force Multiplication
A trade-off where force is increased by pushing a small piston over a long distance to move a larger piston (with more area) a shorter distance.
Car Brake System
A hydraulic application where a foot pushes a small piston in a master cylinder, creating pressure that travels to larger pistons at the wheels to clamp brake pads.
Hydraulic Cylinders
The components in heavy machinery like excavators where high-pressure oil is pumped to push against internal pistons to lift massive loads.
Aircraft Flight Controls
Systems that use hydraulic pumps to multiply a pilot's input force to move wings flaps (ailerons and elevators) against high-velocity wind.
Passenger Elevators
Low-to-medium-rise lifts pushed from below by an electric pump forcing oil into a massive underground cylinder.
Mechanic's Bottle Jack
A hand-operated tool that uses a small piston and fluid reservoir to allow a person to lift a heavy vehicle with one hand.
Buoyant Force
The upward pushing force exerted by any fluid (liquid or gas) on any object placed inside it, making objects feel lighter when submerged.
