Psychoanalytic Social Theory
theory assumes that social and cultural conditions, especially childhood experiences, have a powerful effect on later personality.
Karen Horney
A German psychoanalyst born in 1885, she is known for her critique of Freud and development of a socially oriented view of psychoanalysis. She was one of the first women in that country admitted to medical school.
Basic Anxiety
“a feeling of being isolated and helpless in a world conceived as potentially hostile“
Protective Devices
Mechanisms individuals use to protect themselves from basic anxiety.
Affection
[protective device] people try to purchase love with self-effacing compliance, material goods, or sexual favors.
Submissiveness
[protective device] may submit themselves to either people or institutions such as an organization or a religion in order to gain affection.
POWER, Prestige, possesion
[protective device] defense against the real or imagined hostility of others, tendency to dominate others.
