What does (Loose) Areolar connective tissue do?
It loosely connects tissues and organs. It provides strength and elasticity. Collagen fibers give strength, while elastic fibers give elasticity.

Between muscle and skin
What is Reticular connective tissue?
It is a loose network of cells and branching reticular fibers. Fibroblasts are the cells that make the fibers, and it has a fibrous matrix.
What does Reticular connective tissue do?
It creates a framework that supports soft organs, especially lymphatic organs. Reticular fibers branch out to form this framework.
Where is Reticular connective tissue found?
Liver, spleen, tonsils, appendix, lymph nodes, and bone marrow.
What is Adipose tissue?
It is made of large cells filled with fat (triglycerides). The cells are called adipocytes and they are surrounded by a fibrous matrix.
What does Adipose tissue do?
It stores energy for a long time, protects the body, and provides insulation.

Deep to the skin and around internal organs.

What is Dense Irregular Connective Tissue?
It has collagen fibers packed closely together, but the fibers do not run parallel. Fibroblasts make the fibers, and it has a fibrous matrix.

It resists stretching in many different directions. The collagen fibers give the tissue strength.

What is Blood tissue?
It has cells that are widely spaced in a liquid matrix called plasma. The cells include erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets.
What does Blood tissue do?
Erythrocytes transport oxygen, leukocytes fight infection, and platelets help with blood clotting.

In the cardiovascular system.
What is cartilage tissue?
It has widely spaced cells in a uniform gel-like matrix. The cells are called chondrocytes. Chondrocytes are found in spaces called lacunae. Cartilage is avascular, meaning it has no blood supply.

It provides structures with some flexibility, provides cushioning, and reduces friction between joints.

Articular cartilage, nasal cartilage, ear, epiglottis, intervertebral discs, and pubic symphysis.

What is skeletal muscle tissue?
It has long, multinucleated cell fibers. The cells are called muscle fibers (myocytes). The fibers have striations (light and dark bands).

Voluntary contraction, meaning you can control its movement.
Where is skeletal muscle tissue located?
Muscle attached to bone and skin.
What is cardiac muscle tissue?
It has short, branched cells with a single, centrally located nucleus. The cells are called cardiomyocytes. They have striations (light and dark bands) and intercalated discs connect the cells to each other.

Involuntary rhythmic contractions, meaning it contracts without you having to control it.
Where is cardiac muscle tissue located?
Only in the myocardium of the heart wall.
What is smooth muscle tissue?
It has many short cells with tapered ends (spindle-shaped). The cells are called myocytes. They have one centrally located nucleus and no striations.

It is used for communication and coordinating bodily functions. Neurons send signals, while neuroglia provide protection and support.

Central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system (cranial and spinal nerves).
