What is the general structure of an interview?

  1. Greet the client and put them at ease

  2. Ask the client to explain their problem to you in their words

  3. Ask open questions during the course of their explanation if any point is unclear or you need more information

  4. Satisfy yourself that you have enough information to research if necessary and advise if the matter is straightforward. Summarise the key facts for your client to give them the opportunity to correct any errors or add any information

  5. Explain to the client in plain English the issues and law as they relate to their matter

  6. Check that the client has understood your explanation and revisits any points of difficulty

  7. Ask the client if they have any questions for you and answer them if you can. If you can’t answer them immediately, say so and agree to get bac to them on any outstanding points.

  8. Conclude the interview on a positive note and ensure that the client understands their position as far as you can advise them at this stage.

  9. Follow up the interview as soon as possible to maintain the rapport with the client and ensure that they have confidence in you
