Aqueous humor
The fluid contained within the anterior chamber of the eye.
Extrusion
An eye injury involving the eye being pulled out of its socket.
Mandible
The only facial bone that is not fused into immovable joints.
Sclera
The tough outer coat of the eyeball, which is a sphere approximately 1inch in diameter.
Lens
The portion of the eye that focuses light to the retina.
Conjunctiva
The thin covering of the inner eyelids and the only area from which an EMT should attempt to remove a foreign object.
Orbits
The bony structures of the skull that surround the eyes; injuries to these may also cause trauma to the cervical spine.
Zygomatic bones
The proper medical term for the cheekbones.
Saline
An appropriate irrigant for an EMT to use for treatment of a chemical burn to the eye.
Malar
A term used to describe the cheek bone or a type of facial fracture involving the cheek.
Maxillae
A set of facial bones that are fused into immovable joints.
Chemical burn to the eye
A dire emergency requiring irrigation for at least 20minutes or at least 1hour if the injury involves an alkali.
Vitreous body
A part of the eye structure distinct from the anterior chamber, lens, and cornea.
Facial bones
The face consists of a total of 14 bones.
Orbital fracture
An injury characterized by double vision, nasal discharge, tenderness to palpation, and potential paralysis of an upward gaze.
