Population Attributable Risk (PAR)
The amount of 'extra' disease attributable to a risk factor in a particular population.
Liberty Right
A protected sphere in which one can decide how to act for oneself, without a risk of being coercion.
Right
An entitlement to do something or be in a certain state.
Respect for Autonomy
Recognition of the capacity and entitlement of others to make decisions concerning their own lives.
Autonomy
Self-determination. The capacity to make decisions for oneself, according to one's values.
Liberty
Freedom.
Coercion
Force or threats of force.
Harm Principle
The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.
Necessity Principle
Use of coercion must be necessary to protect welfare.
Principle of Proportionality
Use of coercion must be proportionate to the harm that might otherwise occur.
Years of Life Lost (YLL)
Represents mortality by counting the years lost due to premature death caused by a disease.
Years Lived with Disability (YLD)
Represents morbidity by counting the years lived with the disease.
Disability Adjusted Life Year (DALY)
A summary measure of population health that combines data on premature mortality (fatal) and non-fatal health outcomes to represent the health of a particular population as a single number.
Medical Model of Disability
Views disabled peoples as being defined by their illness, paints disability as an individual issue, and promotes views of disabled peoples being dependent and needing to be cured.
Social Model of Disability
Disability is a social issue caused by policies, attitudes towards those with disabilities, or the environment; focuses on getting rid of societal barriers instead of relying on medical cures.
