Panning shots

movements of the camera that scan a scene horizontally They are taken from a stationary axis point, with the camera mounted on a tripod.

Reaction Shot

movement of the camera away from the central attrction-usually a speaker-to capture the reaction of an onlooker or listener. In such cases, the pan is a way to preserve the cause-effect relationship between the two subjects and emphasize the solidarity and connectedness of people.

Swish Pan (aka Flash Pan and Zip Pan )

variaion of reaction shot and is often used for transitions between shots-as a substitute cut. It involves a whirling of the camera at a speed so rapid that only blurred images are recorded.

Dolly Shots

Sometimes called trucking or tracking shots, are taken from a moving vehicle. The vehicle literally moves in and out, or alongside a moving figureor object while the attention is being photographed.

Hand-held shots

Generally less lyrical, more noticable then vehicular cshots. Hand-held cameras, which are usually mounted with a harness on the cinematographer’s shoulder, allow operators to move in ord out of scenes with greater flexibility and speed.Often used for POV shots. often jumpy and ragged.

Crane shots

essentially airborne dolly shots. A crane is kind of mechanical arm, often more than 20 feet in length. In many respects, it resembles the crane usedby telephone companies to repair lines. It can move virtually and direction up, down, diagonally, in our, or any combination of these

Zoom LEnse

dont usually involve the actual movement of the camera, but on screen their efect is very much like a very fast tracking or crane shot. The zoom is a combination o flenses, which areare continuously variable, permitting the camera to change from close wide-angle distances to extreme telephoto positions almost simultaniously. The effect is a breathtaking sense of being plunged into a scene, or an equally jolting sense of being plucked out of it.

Aerial shots

sually taken from a helicopter, and are really variations of the crane shot. Like a crane, the helicopter can move in virtually any direction .Ocassionally used to suggest a swooping sense of freedom

Steadicam

A camera stabilizing device that allows cinematographers to move smoothly through a set or location without dhaking or bobbing

Mechanical Distortions of Movement

presesnt day camera records movement st 24 frames per second . by simply manipulating the timing mechanism of the camera and/or projector, a filmmaker can distort the movement on screen . There are five Basic disortions of the is kind. Animation, fast motion, slowmaotion , reverse motion and freeze frames

Animation

there are two fundimental differences between animation and live action movies. In animation sequences, each frame is photographed seperatly, rather than comtinuously at the rate of 24 fps. For every second of screen time , 24 seperate drawings usaually have to be photographed

FAst motion

achived by having events photographed at a slower rate than 24fps. The effect is one of acceleration

slow motion

is achieved by photographing events at faster trate than 24 fps and projecting the filmstip at the standard speed. where speed tends to be the natural rhytm of comedy , slow, dignified Movemnet tend to be associated with tradgedy. when violent scenees are photographed in slow motion, the effect is paradoxically beautiful.

reverse motion

simply involves hotographing an action with the film running reversed. When projected on the screen , the events run backward

freeze vrfame

suspends all movement on the screen . A single image is selected and reprinted for as many frames as is nessesary to suggest halting of motion. by interrupting a sequence with a freeze shot, the director calls attention to an image.
