Evolution

Cladogenesis
Evolutionary change characterized by sudden branching events where multiple lineages diverge.
Anagenesis
Gradual evolutionary change along a single continuous lineage.
Hyracotherium (Eohippus)
An early horse ancestor from the Eocene epoch (54–45 million years ago) that was 10–20 inches tall, fox-sized, had four toes on front feet, three on back feet, an arched back, and simple teeth.
Mesohippus
A horse ancestor from the Oligocene epoch (38 million years ago) that grew larger, lost a toe, and developed more complex teeth.
Miohippus
A horse ancestor from 32–25 million years ago with a larger, longer skull, deeper facial fossa, and extra crest on upper cheek teeth that coexisted with Mesohippus for 4 million years.
Parahippus
A horse ancestor from the Miocene epoch (23 million years ago) that was larger with a brain and body size similar to Miohippus.
Merychippus
A horse ancestor from 18–17 million years ago (Miocene epoch) in which the middle toe became dominant and a hoof developed.
Pliohippus
The first true one-toed horse from the Pliocene epoch (12 million years ago); it was the size of a modern pony with curved teeth and was not a direct ancestor of Equus.
Dinohippus
The immediate ancestor of Equus that developed the stay apparatus in the leg for standing rest.
Stay apparatus
An anatomical adaptation in the leg developed by Dinohippus that enables standing rest.
Equus
The modern horse genus that appeared about 1 million years ago during the Pleistocene epoch, originated in North America, and represents the only surviving branch of the horse lineage.
Equus burchelli
Plains zebra found in Africa.
Equus zebra
Mountain zebra found in South Africa.
Equus grevyi
Grevy's zebra, described as the most horse-like zebra.
