Stance Phase
A main category of gait consisting of 5 phases: initial contact, loading response, mid stance, terminal stance, and pre-swing.
Swing Phase
A main category of gait consisting of 3 phases: initial swing, mid swing, and terminal swing.
Weight Acceptance
A functional task comprising 2 phases: initial contact and loading response.
Single Limb Support
A functional task comprising 2 phases: mid stance and terminal stance.
Limb Advancement
A functional task comprising 4 phases: pre-swing, initial swing, mid swing, and terminal swing.
Loading Response
Described as the rapid, most challenging, and biggest onloading phase of body weight.
Quads + Glutes
Muscles that are active during the weight acceptance phase of loading response.
Hip ABD + calves
Muscles that are active during the terminal stance phase of single limb support.
Hip flexors + Hamstrings + pretibials
Muscles active during the limb advancement task.
MTPExt
An action occurring during pre-swing at toe off to clear the floor.
ECC DF to PF
The transition from eccentric dorsiflexion to plantarflexion noted during the pre-swing phase.
Initial Contact
Phase 1 of the stance phase and the first part of the weight acceptance task.
Mid Stance
Phase 3 of the stance phase where the foot is vertical as body weight transfers.
Terminal Stance
Phase 4 of the stance phase and the concluding part of the single limb support task.
Pre-swing
Phase 5 of the stance phase that rapidly transfers demand to clear the floor.
Initial Swing
Phase 6 of gait, characterized by rapid D and maximum knee flexion.
Mid Swing
Phase 7 of the gait cycle, which is part of the swing phase and limb advancement.
Terminal Swing
Phase 8 of the gait cycle, representing the final phase of limb advancement.
MTPExtension
The specific movement used to clear the floor during the transition of the leg from behind the body to in front.
Pre-swing Phase Transition
The stage where the leg transfers from behind the body to in front via limb advancement.
