the anterior compartment of the hip joint is made up of these muscles
(1) = iliopsoas (psoas major + iliacus)
(2) = psoas minor

psoas major

iliacus

what is the origin of the psoas major?
lumbar vertebrae

what is the origin of iliacus?
iliac fossa of ilium

what is the insertion of iliopsoas?
lesser trochanter of femur

what is the action of the psoas major?
- flexes thigh
- ipsilaterally bends the vertebral column
what is the action of the iliacus?
flexes thigh
psoas minor

what is the action of the psoas minor?
aids in flexion of trunk
posterior "superficial" gluteal muscles
gluteus maximus, medius, minimus
gluteus maximus

ORIGIN of gluteus maximus
dorsal ilium, sacrum, and coccyx

INSERTION of gluteus maximus
gluteal tuberosity of femur and iliotibial tract

ORIGIN of gluteus medius & minimus
lateral surface of ilium

INSERTION of gluteus medius & minimus
greater trochanter of femur

what is the action of the gluteus maximus?
- extends the thigh, especially during flexion
- laterally rotates the thigh
- abducts the thigh

what is the action of the gluteus medius & minimus?
- abducts thigh
- medially rotates thigh
- stabilizes pelvis during walking

what are the actions of the sartorius muscle?
- flexes knee
- flexes hip
- abducts & laterally rotates thigh = crossing ur legs

the sartorius originates at?
anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS)

the sartorius inserts at?
medial side of proximal tibia

the vastus medialis originates at?
linea aspera + intertrochanteric line

vastus intermedius origin
anterior and lateral shaft of femur

vastus lateralis origin
linea aspera + intertrochanteric line

what is the action of the gracilis?
like the other medial thigh muscles: adducts & flexes thigh
ALSO: flexes & medially rotates LEG

adductor magnus origin
inferior ramus of the pubis, ramus of ischium, and ischial tuberosity

adductor magnus insertion
linea aspera and adductor tubercle of femur

gracilis origin
body + inferior ramus of pubis

gracilis insertion
medial surface of proximal tibia (pes anserinus)
