Ecumene
Places of permanent human settlement
Arithmetic Density
Total number of objects in an area (divide pop. by land area)
Physiological Density
Number of people supported by a unit area of farmable land (divide pop. by arable land area)
Agricultural Density
Ratio of the number of farmers to amount of arable land (divide pop. of farmers by arable land area).
Crude Birth Rate (CBR)
Total number of live births in a year for every 1000 people alive in society.
Crude Death Rate (CDR)
Total number of deaths in a year for every 1000 people alive in society.
Natural Increase Rate (NIR)
Percentage by which population grows within a year.
Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
Defined as the average number of children a woman will have throughout her childbearing years. TFR for the world is 2.5
Population Pyramids
Displays countries’ distinctive pop. structures.
Dependency Ratio
The number of people who are too young or too old to work, compared to number of people in their productive years.
Sex Ratio
Defined as number of males per 100 females in the population.
Demographic Transition
Changes in birth and death rate in a country. Shows five stages of population change as society modernizes.
Epidemiological Transition Model
Predictable stages in disease and life expectancy that countries experience as they develop. (corresponds with DTM model)
Malthusian Theory
Idea that as human population grows, we reach our carrying capacity and our food sources are unsustainable. His theories are predicted on described checks of pop. growth.
Anti-natalist
Idea that having children is morally incorrect.
Pro-natalist
Pro-child and pop. growth.
Infant Mortality Rate (IMR)
The annual number of deaths of infants under one year of age, compared with total live births.
Doubling Time
Time it takes for a population to double- 70/r, where r is the natural increase rate.
Zero Population Growth (ZPG)
A state where a population’s size remains stable because the birth rate equals the death rates.
Overpopulation
The state where the human population rises to an extent exceeding the carrying capacity.
Carrying Capacity
The maximum population size of a species that is sustainable without depleting resources or causing irreversible damage.
