What is structural geology?
The study of deformed rocks caused by forces and stresses related to plate tectonic movement.
What is deformation?
Any change in shape, position, or orientation of a body under stress due to temperature, pressure, deformation rate, or composition.
What happens when stress exceeds rock strength?
Brittle deformation → breaking
Ductile deformation → bending
What are the three scales of observation in structural geology?
Macroscopic (km)
Mesoscopic (m)
Microscopic (mm or less)
What is paleotectonic analysis?
Study of forces in the distant past that need not correspond to current forces.
What is neotectonic analysis?
Study of recent forces, deduced from ongoing tectonic activity.
Who suggested the Continental Drift Hypothesis?
Alfred Wegener
