Glomerular filtration
The first step in urine formation, occurring in the renal corpuscle before tubular secretion.
Three major steps of urine formation
The process consisting of glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption, and tubular secretion.
Tubular reabsorption
The process that moves substances from the filtrate back into the blood to prevent the loss of useful substances like glucose and amino acids.
Tubular secretion
The movement of substances such as excess ions, wastes, and certain drugs from the blood into the tubular fluid.
Renal corpuscle
A structure consisting of the glomerulus and Bowman's capsule responsible for the filtration of plasma to form filtrate.
Glomerulus
A tuft of specialized capillaries within the renal corpuscle.
Bowman’s capsule
The part of the nephron that receives filtrate directly from the glomerulus.
Glomerular hydrostatic pressure
The outward force that favors filtration in the renal corpuscle.
Blood colloid osmotic pressure
A force that acts against filtration during urine formation.
Capsular hydrostatic pressure
A force that acts against the process of filtration.
Net filtration
The result determined by the balance of opposing and favoring forces acting within the nephron.
Abnormal urine components
Substances such as glucose, proteins, and red blood cells that are generally not found in the urine of a healthy individual.
Normal urine components
Substances commonly found in urine, including water, sodium, urea, and other dissolved solutes.
Glucose in urine
An abnormal finding that may suggest impaired tubular reabsorption or abnormal blood glucose regulation.
Dipstick urinalysis
A diagnostic method using chemical indicator reagents where results are determined by comparing pad color to a standard chart.
Descending limb of the nephron loop
The portion of the nephron that reabsorbs water and helps increase medullary filtrate concentration.
Proximal convoluted tubule
The part of the nephron that reabsorbs water, glucose, amino acids, and approximately 65% of the total filtrate.
Distal tubule
A structure that reabsorbs additional sodium and water, with its permeability controlled by hormones.
Collecting duct
The structure responsible for helping to regulate the final water content of urine.
Loop of Henle
The section of the nephron that helps create a concentration gradient in the medulla.
Healthy kidney filtration
The process of filtering blood plasma while retaining most blood cells.
