Cartographer
A person who creates maps.
Reference Map
A map designed for general reference showing the exact location of spatial phenomena, such as political, physical, classroom, or Google maps.
Thematic Map
A data-driven map that emphasizes spatial patterns and helps explain relationships between places, such as climate, population density, or life expectancy maps.
Choropleth Map
A thematic map that uses various colors, shades of one color, or patterns to show spatial data distribution, where darker shades typically represent higher statistical values.
Dot Map
A map that displays the specific location and distribution of data across a territory using dots, where each dot represents a specified quantity.
Graduated Symbol Map
A map that uses symbols of varying sizes to indicate different quantitative amounts, based on a scale determined by the map key.
Isoline Line Map
A map that uses lines connecting points of equal value to depict data variations across space, such as elevation in topographic maps.
Cartogram
A map in which the spatial geometry or area is distorted to convey the information of an alternative variable.
Absolute Location
The exact, precise position of a place on Earth, determined by a universal coordinate system like latitude and longitude or a specific address.
Latitude (Parallels)
Lines that run east to west but measure distances north or south from the equator (0♮ or 0× represented as 0N/S) starting at 0 up to 90 at the poles, affecting climate and temperature.
Longitude (Meridians)
Lines that run north to south but measure distances east or west from the Prime Meridian (0) to the International Date Line (180), creating the 24 time zones.
Relative Location
The location of a place defined in relation to something else, which can change through time and is used with mental maps.
Absolute Distance
The exact distance between two points measured using standard units of measurement, such as miles or kilometers.
Relative Distance
The distance between two places determined relative to contextual factors such as mode of transportation, traffic congestion, weather, or speed limits.
Absolute Direction
Universal and fixed directional indicators (North, South, East, West) that never change regardless of orientation.
Relative Direction
Directions based on an individual's frame of reference or perception, such as left, right, forward, backward, up, or down.
Spatial Analysis
A type of geographical analysis—often called "the why of the where"—that seeks to explain spatial patterns of human behavior and arrangements.
Pattern
The arrangement of objects (such as people, cities, or farms) in relationship to one another across space, categorized as clustered (nucleated), dispersed, or linear.
Map Projection
The process of showing the curved three-dimensional surface of the Earth on a flat two-dimensional map, which inevitably creates distortions in shape, area, distance, and direction (SADD).
Mercator Projection
A map projection created for navigation where directions are accurate and latitude/longitude lines meet at right angles, though landmasses near the poles appear enlarged.
Gall-Peters Projection
An equal-area map projection designed to accurately show spatial distributions and relative sizes of landmasses, despite distorting shapes, especially near the poles.
Robinson Projection
An aesthetically pleasing map projection where area and shape are close to accurate, though ocean sizes look accurate and all four spatial properties contain slight distortions.
Goode's Homolosine Projection
An interrupted map projection that preserves the equal relative size and shape of landmasses, but distorts distance and direction due to ocean separations.
Global Positioning System (GPS)
A navigation network consisting of 24 satellites and receivers that pinpoints precise absolute locations on Earth.
Remote Sensing
The acquisition of data about Earth's surface from a distance using platforms such as orbiting satellites or airplanes to scan terrain features like elevation, water, and vegetation.
Geographic Information System (GIS)
A computer database system designed to capture, store, analyze, interpret, and layer spatial data gathered from navigation systems like GPS.
Fieldwork Observations
The act of observing, recording, and collecting data directly at a specific location using tools like sketches, interviews, and high-tech satellite data.
Quantitative Data
Information that can be measured and recorded using numerical values, such as census distributions by age or income.
Qualitative Data
Descriptive information focused on gaining an understanding of underlying motives, perceptions, and opinions through open-ended responses, observations, and interviews.
Place
A location defined by its unique combination of human and physical characteristics.
Site
The absolute location of a settlement defined by unchanging physical landscape characteristics, such as climate, landforms, soil quality, and availability of fresh water.
Situation
The location of a place relative to its surroundings and other places, describing its accessibility, connectivity, and access to resources or markets.
Distance Decay
The phenomenon where interaction between two locations decreases or decays as the physical distance between them increases due to the friction of distance.
Time-Space Compression
The shrinking of travel time or travel distance between locations resulting from advancements in transportation and communication technologies.
Environmental Determinism
The theory that the physical environment (climate, landforms, resources) exclusively dictates human behavior, societal development, and survival success.
Possibilism
The theory that while the natural environment sets limits, people have the capacity to adapt, modify, and overcome environmental challenges using technology.
Sustainability
The practice of using Earth's resources in ways that avoid depletion and maintain ecological balance for future generations.
Map Scale
The relationship between the proportion of area and detail shown on a map relative to its actual size on Earth, divided into large scale (small area, high detail) and small scale (large area, low detail).
Scale of Analysis
The level at which data is aggregated and analyzed by geographers (global, regional, national, local) to examine spatial patterns and variations.
Formal Region
An area defined by one or more unifying factual characteristics that are shared throughout, such as official political borders, languages, religions, or climate zones.
Functional Region
An area organized around a central focal node and defined by activities or interactions that diminish in strength as distance from the node increases.
Perceptual (Vernacular) Region
An area defined by informal, subjective assumptions, mental maps, or cultural perceptions rather than strict geographic boundaries or facts.
