What is hemopoiesis also known as?
Hematopoiesis, the production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
Where does hematopoiesis primarily occur?
In the red bone marrow.
What is the first cell in the red blood cell production pathway?
Proerythroblast.
What hormone is necessary for the production of red blood cells?
Erythropoietin (EPO).
What organ produces erythropoietin (EPO)?
The kidneys.
What is the process of platelet production called?
Thrombopoiesis.
What hormone is involved in the production of platelets?
Thrombopoietin (TPO).
What organ produces thrombopoietin (TPO)?
The liver.
What is bilirubin?
A toxic molecule produced during the breakdown of hemoglobin in red blood cells.
What is jaundice?
A sign of elevated bilirubin levels leading to yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes.
What causes prehepatic jaundice?
Destruction of too many red blood cells.
What causes hepatic jaundice?
Inability of the liver to metabolize bilirubin properly.
What is polycythemia?
An increased concentration of red blood cells.
What are the normal white blood cell count ranges?
5,000 to 9,000 cells per microliter.
What is considered a low platelet count?
Below 150,000 cells per microliter.
What is hemostasis?
The process of stopping bleeding.
What two processes are involved in hemostasis?
Platelet plug formation and blood coagulation.
