cleared the weapon

1. point the weapon in a safe direction
2. attempt to place the selector on safe
3. remove the magazine from the weapon
4. lock the bolt open
5. ensure the receiver and chamber are free of ammo
6. place the selector lever on safe
7. send the bolt forward

disassembled the weapon

1. remove the sling
2. remove handguards
3. push the take-down pin
4. separate the upper and lower receivers
5. remove the carrying handle IF applicable
6. pull back the charging handle
7. remove the bolt carrier and bolt
8. remove the charging handle
9. disassemble the bolt carrier
10. remove the firing pin retaining the pin
11. push in bolt assembly to the locked position
12. drop the firing pin out of the rear of the bolt carrier
13. remove the bolt cam pin by turning it 1/4 of a turn and lifting it out
14. lift out the extractor and spring
15. remove buffer and buffer spring in the butt stock
16. Press in buffer depress retainer and release buffer
17. remove buffer and action spring
18. remove butt stock
19. extend butt stock
20. separate but stock from lower receiver extension
21. grasp lock lever in the area of the retaining nut
22. pull downward
23. slide buttstock to the rear

functions check m4

1. start on safe
2. pull trigger
3. charge
4. auto
5. trigger and hold
6. fire until you hear a click
7. charge
8. auto
9. pull the trigger and hold
10. charge

assembled the weapon

1. assemble the bolt carrier
2. insert the extractor and spring
3. push in the extractor pin
4. slide the bolt into the carrier
5. replace the bolt and camp pin
6. drop in and seat the firing pin
7. pull the bolt back
8. replace the retaining pin
9. engage and then push the charging handle in part of the way
10. slide in the bolt carrier assembly
11. push in the bolt carrier and charging handle at the same time
12. insert action spring and buffer
13. install the buttstock assembly
14. join the upper and lower receivers
15. engage the receiver pivot pin
16. close upper and lower receivers
17. push in take down the pin
18. replace the handguards
19. replace the carrying handle if applicable
20. replace the sling
