hearing aids can

improve and aid sound quality, improve speech understanding in background noise, improve location, can make soft sounds more audible

hearing aids cannot

completely restore hearing, completely eliminate background noise, improve outer or middle ear pathologies, restore hair cell function

good candidates for cochlear implant

adults: moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, word recognition scores typically >60%

children: severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, low speech recognition scores

single sided deafness: patients who have profound sensorineural hearing loss in one ear and normal hearing in the opposite ear

FM system

frequency modulation, radio streams into hearing aid

device placed near the TV that picks up sound and streams it into hearing aid
