Thermal Energy
The kinetic energy (KE) of particles that make up matter or substances.
Direction of Thermal Energy Transfer
The rule governing heat flow, which states that hot always goes to cold.
Law of Conservation of Energy
The fundamental principle stating that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or transformed.
Mechanical Energy
A type of energy exemplified by a moving car or a rolling ball.
Electromagnetic Energy
A type of energy exemplified by sunlight, microwaves, and light waves.
Sound Energy
A type of energy exemplified by a ringing bell, heels clicking on the floor, or a speaker playing music.
Chemical Energy
Energy stored in substances, with examples including food and batteries.
Byproducts of Energy Transformations
Forms of energy into which energy is often transformed during energy transformations, specifically sound energy and thermal energy (TE).
Hair Dryer Energy Transformation
The energy transformation occurring when using a hair dryer, changing electrical energy into thermal energy (TE), kinetic energy (KE), and sound energy (SE).
Rocket Takeoff Energy Transformations
The set of energy transformations that happen when a rocket takes off, where chemical energy (CE) transforms into thermal energy (TE), kinetic energy (KE), sound energy (SE), light energy (LE), and gravitational potential energy (GPE).

Potential Energy Changes on a Slope
The change in energy as a toy moves down steps or a marble rolls down a hill, transforming potential energy (PE) to kinetic energy (KE) as it goes from high PE / low KE to low PE / high KE.
