Older
One solution to the problem of a growing population of older dependants is the ‘Help to Adapt’ scheme.
This scheme was set up in 2015 offering no interest loans to people over 60 to adapt their homes for their future needs e.g. installing ramps, stair lifts etc.
Although this scheme ended in 2017, the city council now offer free adaptations that are recommended by social workers allowing elderly people to remind in their homes.
Underpopulated family homes
One solution to underpopulated family homes was “Clyde plan”
This is a planning authority that assesses the housing needs and demands for Glasgow, and highlights any issues in housing availability.
This was effective as it highlighted that 15,000 new homes needed to be built in the next 5 years to improve access to housing for all occupants.
Student accommodation
One solution to student related demand is building more student accommodation.
A 335 room student accommodation building has been built in Glasgow including a gym, cinema, and
study areas to attract students to live here rather than renting privately.
This has not been effective as the student accommodation is expensive and many students still prefer to rent privately, meaning they are taking housing that locals could use.
Air bnbs
Local residents didn’t feel safe when Air BnB’s set up in their apartment buildings.
therefore in March 2017 the City Council introduced a new rule to combat this: permission cannot be given for an entire flat to operate as an Airbnb property if it is within a close with a communal entrance.
This has been effective as there has been a reduction in the reporting of Air BnBs complaints made to police.
