New cards

Overall Information :

Fill in the blank :

The ___ structure of matter dictates the means for the ___ and ___ of electrical power.

The Atomic structure of matter dictates the means for the Production and Transmission of electrical power

2
New cards

Overall Information :

What are the two particles of the matter ?

Microscopic particles made of electrons and protons.

3
New cards

Overall Information :

What is a molecule and a compound ?

Molecule is the smallest particle into which any compound can be divided and still retain its identity.

Compound is a chemical combination of two or more different elements. The smallest possible particle of a compound is a molecule.

Exemple :

Molecule (H2) same atoms - not a compound

Compound (H2O) different atoms - its a molecule

4
New cards

Overall Information :

What will happen if a molecule is divided ?

It will consist of particles called atoms, which is the smallest possible particle of an element.

Exemple : a piece of pure iron

Atoms : this piece is composed of billions of individual physical particles. These are atoms.

Element : All these atoms belong to the same and unique chemical category. The element Iron (Fe).

5
New cards

Overall Information :

Describe an atoms visually a protons, neutrons and electrons.

Protons and neutrons form the nucleus of the atoms and the electrons are spread around the nucleus in orbits.

*See the image.

6
New cards

Overall Information :

Fill in the blank :

A ___ charge is carried by each proton and a ___ charge is carried by each electron.

A positive charge is carried by each proton and a negative charge is carried by each electron.

7
New cards

Overall Information :

What will happen if the atoms has a short or excess of electrons ?

Shortage of electrons will be positively charged = positive ion

Excess of electrons will be negatively charged = negative ion

Protons remain within the nucleus, only electrons are added or removed.

8
New cards

Overall Information :

how can we determine the number of shells in an atoms ?

The number of shells (electron orbit) in an atoms depends on the total number of electrons surrounding the nucleus.

9
New cards

Overall Information :

What the definition of a free electrons ?

The electrons that move from one atoms to another.

10
New cards

Overall Information :

What is the definitions of a valance electrons ? How many do you have in a conductors, semiconductors or/and insulators ?

The valance orbit of any atom is the outermost orbit (shell) of that atom. The electrons in this valance orbit are known as valance electrons.

Conductors : 1 to 4 ( ex: gold and silver have 1)

Semiconductors : 4 ( ex: germanium and silicon)

Insulators : 5 to 8 (ex: neon and helium have 8)

11
New cards

Overall Information :

What happen if an extra electron enters the orbit of an atoms ?

The atom becomes very unstable and the repelling force immediately causes another electron to move out of the orbit into the orbit of another. In a conductor, electrons move easily from one atom to another.
