Define physical change?
No new substance formed: reversible Ex: Ice melting → water
Includes change in size, shape, state, solution
Define Chemical Change?
New substance formed Ex: H2 + O2 → H2O
Change in colour, odour, temperature or light given off, bubbles of a new gas, a new solid
Whats an element?
Pure substance made of one type of atom Ex: Helium (He), Oxygen (O2)
Whats a compound?
Pure substance is made of identical molecules that contain two or more different atoms chemically bonded together Ex: 2 hydrogens atoms + 1 oxygen atom = H2O
Whats a solution?
A homogeneous mixture that looks the same everywhere and you can’t see see the different parts. Ex: 2 hydrogens atoms + 1 oxygen atom = H2O Ex: salt and water mixed } there for you can’t see different parts
Whats a mehancial mixture?
Heterogenous mixture: looks different in different parts you can see the different parts easily Ex: Granola bar
What are physical properties?
Are properties that can be observed Ex: state, colour, lustre. texture, optical clarity, viscosity, hardness, malleability, ductility, conductivity, density
What are chemical properties?
Are properties that describe how a substance reacts Ex: ability to react with water, ability to react with acid, ability to react with oxygen, ability to burn
