Electric Charge

The source of electric forces, existing in two types: positive and negative.

Proton

One of the three types of particles that make up atoms, located in the nucleus and has a positive charge.

Electron

One of the three types of particles that make up atoms, orbiting the nucleus and having a negative charge.

Neutron

One of the three types of particles that make up atoms, found in the nucleus and having no charge.

Attractive Force

A force that causes two objects to be pulled toward each other, such as gravity.

Repulsive Force

A force that causes two objects to push away from each other.

Electrically Neutral

An object with the same number of positive and negative charges; most matter is generally electrically neutral.

Net Charge

The sum of the charges on an object; positive if more protons than electrons, negative if more electrons than protons.

Static Charge

Non-zero net charge that is not moving.

Electrical Conductor

Any material within which electrons can move freely, primarily metals.

Electrical Insulator

Materials that do not allow electrons to move freely, such as rubber or plastic used to cover electrical wires.
